Get Started is a project designed to help local community groups and projects grow in the area. Running from March 2014 to September 2014 the project has currently helped over twenty organisations operating in North Hull. Supported has ranged from reduced rate Room Hire, free printing, help sourcing key training, sourcing volunteers and offering IAG. The project has assisted new start up groups and those who have been operating for a number of years.
Food for Thought
Food for thought is a multi-faced project designed to promote healthy eating and knowledge. Combining the HU6 Community Allotments, Cook and Taste sessions and the Food Bag Scheme, food for thought offers something for everyone. The project is part funded from the National Lottery’s awards for all, which in particular has allowed Unity in Community to rejuvenate the HU6 Community Allotments. Staff and volunteers (recruited through partnerships with Groundworks, the PCSOs and Unity Training) have seen the site transformed in the past year and produced a number of crops that we have distributed through the food bags.
Unity in Community delivers Food Bags through partnership with Fare Share and Real Aid. This has allowed us to expand the number of bags and offer and focus what is provided. A bag can include items including bread, yoghurts, cereal, tinned goods, fruit, veg and occasionally treats such as chocolate and crisps. Food bags are available every Thursday from 11am. However bags are limited and are usually gone by 3pm. To ensure the project is sustainable we ask for a small donation for every bag.
Our Cook and Taste sessions have been replaced by Cooking demonstrations that run throughout the year and operate with a number of partners including Top Bannana and Unity Training. Attendees will be shown how to cook a nutritious meal which can serve one or the whole family and to show just how good it tastes they’ll get a sample to take home.
Unity in Community offer food bags to the public, priced at £1.50 a bag every Thursday lunch time. Bags contain a number of items including tins. packets and fresh fruit/vegetables. Limited availability. Food is provided from Real Aid.
Cook and Taste
The focus of Cook and Taste is to show you how to cook simple nutritional meals and take advantage of fresh seasonal produce. Each event is led by a nutritionist who will cook the food. At the end you’ll get to try each of the courses prepared. Recipes are provided. If you would like to find out about the next event and book a place then you can email us or give us a call on 01482 852292.
Looking Good Feeling Good
Looking Good Feeling Good was set up by us in 2006 with the support of the NHS. It has since become an independent group. It provides weekly exercise classes which are accessible to everyone regardless of physical mobility or age. Here, members are encouraged to maintain healthy living through the use of exercise and weekly health journals. Looking Good Feeling Good has appeared in numerous health publications and on national television. Check out our YouTube channel for examples. They also provide members with social opportunities such as weekend trips away and fundraising activities. For more information email us or give us a call on 01482 852292.
